PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Tim Morehouse was an Olympic silver medalist in fencing in the 2008 Olympics. Now he's looking to train the next generation of fencers in Port Chester.

The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club opened in September at 135 Pearl St. and is already making its mark. Morehouse said he wants to have the number one youth and elite fencing club in the world, and bring Olympic medals to Westchester.

"There is a high demand for fencing in the Westchester area," Morehouse said. "I was looking for locations and Port Chester seemed to be right in the middle of everything. Port Chester looks like a tremendous village on the rise."

Morehouse said fencing is a sport on the rise and its prime location means they often get people coming in off the street or by people who drive by and look in the window.

"People just fall in love with it," Morehouse said.

Morehouse has fond memories of his time competing at three Olympics, also representing the United States in 2004 and 2012. He said he keeps his medal in a sock drawer.

"It's a magical world," Morehouse said. "You live a lifetime of experience in two weeks."

Now he wants his students to have the same experience and envisions a ticker tape parade in downtown Port Chester.

Fencing involves a combination of tactics and strategy, with competitors needing good footwork and blade work.

"You can't just beat someone with athleticism," Morehouse said. "You have to have a strategy. People who fence are very smart people, they do well in school. It appeals to people who are more cerebral."

A sport like fencing attracts people of shapes and sizes and Morehouse works to build a game around his student's strengths.

"There's no place I'd rather be than on a fencing strip working with our kids," Morehouse said.
